The Association of Friends of Azerbaijan in France condemned the provocative visit of the head of the Ile-de-France region, Republican Party candidate for the next presidential election Valérie Pécresse, carried out on December 22 in the Azerbaijani city of Khankandi, Trend reported with reference to the association’s statement.
The Association stressed that the city of Khankandi is recognized by international organizations as part of Azerbaijani territory, stressing that visits to these lands without the permission of Azerbaijani authorities are unacceptable.
They pointed out that by visiting Karabakh, Pecresse violated the sovereignty of Azerbaijan, committed provocation and deprived himself of the right to participate in peacekeeping activities.
“Azerbaijan is a secular country, like France. Therefore, it is not clear why Pecresse’s campaign statements aim to exaggerate the so-called religious threat against Christians in the East ?! In Azerbaijan, which has been visited by the Pope several times in recent years, Christians live in peace and quiet, ”the statement said.
The Association recalled that the Karabakh conflict between the two states was of an exclusively territorial nature.
“In the past 30 years, Armenia, contrary to the condemnation of the UN Security Council, has occupied nearly 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory by military means,” the association said.
The press release notes that the legal liberation of the occupied territories after the restoration of the ceasefire in 2020 must be considered a victory for international law, as in the case of France’s liberation of Alsace-Lorraine from the German occupation in 1918.
“France and its representatives must show impartiality, while respecting the elementary standards of international law, in order to fight for a lasting peace”, declared the association.
Earlier, Baku sent a protest note to Paris against the illegal visit of a French presidential candidate to the Karabakh region in Azerbaijan.
