Obituary: Maryellen Byers Phillips, 87, from Milford


MILFORD, CT – (From Cody-White Funeral Home) 87-year-old Maryellen Byers Phillips, beloved wife of John Phillips Sr., passed away peacefully with the immense love of her family in her heart on Saturday, July 31 2021.

Born September 8, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY to the late John Robert and Susan Mansfield Byers, Maryellen had an idyllic childhood growing up in Glendale, Queens, where she attended St. Pancras and St. Joseph’s Elementary Schools, learned to play playing the piano, explored the Far Rockaways in the summer, and had many adventures in New York City.

She also spent some quality time with her extended, close-knit and much-loved Irish family on the hill.

She absolutely cherished her Irish heritage.

After graduating from high school, Maryellen continued her education at Fordham University while working for the Navy Midland Bank in New York. While vacationing at a resort in the Catskills, “ME” met the love of his life, a country boy from upstate New York. After a whirlwind romance, Maryellen and John married on September 4, 1954 and lived in Ravena, NY until they moved to Milford, Connecticut in 1967, where they continued to raise their family.

Over the years, Maryellen has worked as an accomplished administrative assistant in the Legislative Office of Albany NY and for various companies including Eastern Express, US Motors and Harvey Hubbell. At one point, she also found the time to start a separate career selling real estate.

During this time, Maryellen also developed a deep love for travel. Traveling within the country to the American Southwest, Colorado, and California, among other American destinations, ME has also enjoyed overseas travel, including several trips to his beloved Ireland and others. fascinating places.

Through it all, and while working full time, Maryellen has lovingly looked after her home and family, which feels effortless.

Yet of all the things in Maryellen’s life, she loved being PeeWee, mom, sister and most of all Nana for her precious family the most. She loved spending as much time as possible with them, creating memories and most of all celebrating special events. She really liked a good party.

Besides her husband John, 67, Maryellen is survived by her sons John Phillips Jr., (Vickie) of Hamden, Tom Phillips (Janet) of Orange, Tim Phillips (Mari O’Connor) of Milford and NYC, her daughter Kathy Phillips- Kelley (Billy) of Shelton, and her twin sister Margaret ‘Peggy’ Maguire (Jack) of Brooklyn, NY.

She will also be sadly missed by her grandchildren William and Caitlyn Kelley, Rachel, Sarah and Jeremy Phillips, Christopher (Michelle) and David Rangel, Brigitte (Chris) Lopez, and Kaelyn and Abi Phillips, as well as several great grandchildren, much loved nieces and nephews, in-laws, dear friends, and of course Lucky, her big dog, all of whom she enjoyed the company of and loved with all her heart.

The family would like to recognize and thank the many caregivers over the years including Allison and most recently Lorraine who have helped give Mom the quality of life she deserves at home. We could not have done it without your attention and support and we are eternally grateful to you.

A Catholic Mass celebrating the life of Maryellen will be held on Wednesday August 4th at 10:30 am at St Mary’s Church, 70 Gulf St, Milford.

All are welcome to attend the service. Interment will be private for the family only.
